The centre of a Derbyshire town is getting a major facelift as part of a regeneration project.

Fences are due to go up in Heanor Market Place on Monday.

As well as overhauling the car park and toilets, the work is designed to create an outdoor space that attracts people to the town centre.

The scheme is part of a £17.8m town centre regeneration project, supported by the government's Future High Streets Fund.

The existing car park will be closed during the work

A spokesman for Amber Valley Borough Council said: "This project provides a huge opportunity to reimagine the space and attract people to the Heart of Heanor, both locally and from further afield.

"By placing people first, improving accessibility and reducing the impact of traffic, Market Place can fulfil its true potential for the community."

The existing 30-space car park will temporarily close, but the council said alternatives were nearby.

Pavements will be left unobstructed for the time being but when closures are necessary, advance notice will be given, an official said.
