Samuel Wilson was described as "talented, loving and handsome" by his family

The family of a man who died when a van struck him and two others have paid tribute to a "true gent".

Samuel Wilson, known as Sam, died at the scene and the two men were injured when the vehicle hit them in Market Place, Ilkeston, Derbyshire, at about 02:10 GMT on Saturday.

The 26-year-old's family described him as "talented, loving and handsome".

Zac Newman, 27, of The Crescent, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, has been charged with his murder.

He has also been charged with wounding with intent and attempted grievous bodily harm.

Mr Newman appeared at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday and was remanded into custody.

'Heart of gold'

In a statement through Derbyshire Police, Mr Wilson's family said he "tragically died" while he was out for his football team's annual Christmas celebration.

They said: "Sam, our talented number 12 team player, did not have one bad bone in his body. He had a kind, caring, gentle nature which was something everyone loved about him.

"He genuinely lit up every room with his infectious, cheeky smile and witty sense of humour - a true gent with a heart of gold."

They said Mr Wilson, from Long Eaton, was a "talented" football player and keen Derby County supporter, who rarely missed a game.

"Sam and his girlfriend were inseparable, true soulmates, with their whole lives and future ahead of them," they said.

"He was the best son, brother, nephew, grandson, cousin, friend and boyfriend to all that had the pleasure of being a part of his life.

"The pain that we all feel will never go away, our blue-eyed boy has been taken from us far too early."

They said Mr Wilson would have wanted the family to "cherish the happier times" they shared and added he would "always be talked about and adored by us all".

"Our gorgeous boy will forever be missed," they said. "Until we meet again. Forever in our hearts. Forever 26. We love you."

Police said the two men, who were taken to hospital for treatment, had since been discharged.
