A man has suffered a serious head injury in a suspected attack close to a pub, police have said.
Derbyshire Police said a man in his 40s was found unconscious by officers responding to reports of an assault near to the Creswell's Ours Bar and Lounge at about 01:30 GMT on Saturday.
A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and later released on police bail.
The force said anyone who witnessed what happened should get in touch.
Police said the man, in his 40s, had suffered a serious head injury when he was found near to the Ours Bar and Lounge.
A representative said officers were "particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the Ours bar that night and may have noticed any altercations, or fights, or who saw what happened on Elmton Road in the early hours".
"We would also like to trace a van which is believed to have driven down the road and stopped nearby at the time," they said.
They added that the injured man remained in hospital "in a critical condition".
