A sinkhole has shut the road

A road in a Derbyshire town has been closed after a sinkhole opened up.

Eureka Road in Swadlincote was shut to traffic by Derbyshire Police at about 15:30 BST on Friday after the void appeared.

Eyewitnesses reported the hole, at the junction with Midway Road, was about 3ft (0.9m) deep.

A resident placed a wheelie bin inside prior to the arrival of highways to prevent motorists from driving into the hole.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called to a report of a sinkhole just after 3.30pm.

"A road closure has been put in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area at this time.

"Highways are also aware of the sinkhole."

Derbyshire County Council confirmed it was aware of the incident and was attending the scene.
