Over the past decade, zoos in Devon and Cornwall have contributed £82m to the local economy, according to a new report.
The research, by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), showed Paignton Zoo alone had more than 4.5m visitors over 10 years.
Newquay Zoo and Torquay's Living Coasts were also included in the report.
BIAZA director Dr Miranda Stevenson, said the zoos were also vital for conservation and education.
Phil Knowling, from Paignton Zoo said: "The charity's investment in the local community is huge.
"There's the money spent locally on goods and services - not to mention staff wages - plus all the building work and the knock-on effect for other attractions," he added.
