The Environment Agency has issued precautionary advice against bathing in Exmouth

Bathers have been advised by the Environment Agency (EA) not to swim at Exmouth beach due to sewage being released into the estuary.

Officers completed tests at Phear Park Pumping Station emergency overflow outfall and declared an incident on Thursday.

South West Water (SWW) said the cause is due to a further burst of one of its critical rising mains.

SWW said its teams are "working around the clock".

A spokesperson said: "This is proving to be an incredibly challenging situation, and we are sincerely sorry to customers and local residents for the impact this is causing.

"We are currently extending the previously installed temporary overland pipe, while we continue to complete works on a permanent replacement of the whole rising main."
