An organisation based in Devon is distributing up to 70 recorded bedtime stories a week from inmates around the country to their children.

Storybook Dads, based at HMP Dartmoor, gives prisoners the chance to stay in touch with their families.

Those involved said the work also helped with their rehabilitation.

The charity said it provided an editing and production service to about 100 prisons across the UK.

It said the number of videos distributed every year had grown to more than 5,000 since the organisation was founded in 2002 by Sharon Berry.

Neil, a prisoner who works as an editor for Storybook Dads, said he helps other inmates with recordings alongside reading to his two children.

He told BBC Radio Devon the role had given him "purpose" and a "normal work structure".

"The key thing for me is the day-to-day structure - you go to work Monday to Friday and get that normal structure to my week," he said.

"I've also got kids myself and I do lots of videos and stories for them.

"They love to receive them."

'Positive environment'

Neil said "attitudes need to change" when asked whether the role might undermine the purpose of serving a prison sentence.

"For me, creating a positive environment is a really important thing," he said.

"It can only help myself, my kids, my family, and me in the long term."
