A funeral service has been held for the leader of Poole council.

Councillor Brian Leverett died on 17 September after collapsing at the Civic Centre in the town.

The 69-year-old, who was born in Poole, was elected as a councillor in 1983 and became council leader in 2003.

The service, which began at St Peter's Church in Parkstone at about 1330 BST, was followed by a private ceremony. A book of condolence has been opened at the Civic Centre until Friday.

The union flag at the Civic Centre is being flown at half mast as a mark of respect.

Mr Leverett campaigned for the creation of the Twin Sails Bridge, connecting Hamworthy with Poole port, both in opposition and as leader.

It is due to open in 2012.
