Dorset tip closure may mean 15 mile trip for locals

Bridport residents will have to travel 15 miles (25km) to tip large unwanted household items if a recycling centre closure goes ahead.

The South Street site is the town's only tip and has had temporary planning permission since 1998. This expired in August 2010.

An extension of the permission will be considered at a meeting on 4 March.

The council planning committee is recommending closure of the site due to noise and traffic problems.

'Kerbside collections'

Jason Jones, Dorset County Council's acting head of waste management, said: "It is a difficult situation and we fully appreciate the impact and inconvenience a decision to close the site would have on local people.

"If the site has to close, we strongly urge residents to continue recycling as much as they can by maximising the use of their existing kerbside collection scheme and local mini recycling banks."

The nearest Dorset recycling centres to Bridport are located in Dorchester, Sherborne and Weymouth.

Mr Jones said: "We have had discussions with a neighbouring council about [Bridport] residents using their facilities as an interim measure and we will keep local people informed of our progress."

He added the search for a new waste management site in Bridport is "ongoing".
