Poole's Twin Sails bridge demolition work to start

The bridge will span Backwater Channel between Hamworthy and Poole town centre

Demolition work is set to start to create an approach road to the new £37m Twin Sails bridge in Dorset.

The structure will span Backwater Channel between Hamworthy and Poole.

Work to demolish the Poole Boat Park building will start on Monday which will clear the way for an approach road to the bridge.

Building began on the project in October 2010 with the construction of the bridge's supports. It is scheduled to open in 2012.

The boat park in West Quay Road previously provided dry stack facilities and moorings for marine vessels.

'Key stage'

The northbound lane and footpath adjacent to the building will be closed from 0930 to 1800 BST on Monday.

As part of the work, the site will also be raised as part of the council's programme to reduce the impact of future flooding in the area.

Councillor Xena Dion, member for transportation, said: "The demolition... marks another key stage in the delivery of the Twin Sails bridge.

"I understand this work will cause delays to some people and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"However, I look forward to the construction of the new approach road taking place over the coming months."

The bridge viewing area in West Quay Road will also be closed during the work.
