Bridport fish pass is officially opened

A new fish pass, which helps salmon reach their spawning grounds, has been built in Dorset.

The pass on the River Brit at Palmers Brewery, Bridport, was officially opened earlier.

The construction is designed to help salmon, brown trout and sea trout bypass a weir that has blocked their path since the late 1700s.

It is part of a larger project being carried out across the South West to help migratory fish.

The pass provides a channel of water for fish to swim through, allowing them to continue their journey upstream.

Similar passes have already been built on the river at West Harbour sluice gates and Jessopp's Weir and fish have been spotted using them.

The project was a partnership with Westcountry Rivers Trust, Frome, Piddle & West Dorset Fisheries Association, Friends of Rivers, the Environment Agency and Palmers Brewery.
