Dorset beach hut secured after man's five-day queue

The hut lets for the summer season become available in the first week of January

A man who camped out for five nights through gale force winds has secured a sought-after beach hut in Dorset.

Roy Young, 67, from Mudeford, and his family arrived in their camper van at Avon Beach in Christchurch on Sunday night to reserve their place.

When his relatives went back to work on Tuesday, Mr Young stayed at the front of the queue so he could secure one of just two huts up for long-term rent.

About 30 people also queued hoping to get short-term rents on other huts.

'It's just magic'

Mr Young is now the holder of one of the two available long-term leases.

The pair of huts on the beach, which have views of the Isle of Wight, are let for the full summer season at a cost of more than £800.

They are so sought after because tenants have first refusal on re-letting them each year and rarely give them up.

A number of other huts on the beach are also let, but for shorter periods.

Mr Young said: "We love it here, it's just magic. I've done it for the family and the enjoyment we'll get out of it for the summer."

He celebrated with his family over a full English breakfast and said: "I feel wonderful, it was worth all the hassle and all the sleeping out.

"It's just a perfect little spot no matter what age you are."

Two deckchairs

During his wait he braved torrential rain and winds of up to 70mph.

He said he had spent the time reading newspapers and talking to interested passers-by.

Mr Young and his family initially took it in turns to hold their spot at the front of the queue before he took over once they left.

The huts, which are let by the Avon Beach Company, come with a fitted folding table, cupboard and two deckchairs.
