Weymouth Pavilion: Shows go ahead despite closure plans

Two theatre performances are to go ahead as planned at a seaside pavilion which has been recommended for demolition.

Weymouth Pavilion will host its spring performances of Miss Saigon in April and That'll Be The Day in May.

Dorset councillors voted to put plans for the pavilion out to public consultation in December ahead of a full council meeting in February.

No date has been announced for the pavilion's closure.

The authority is looking to reduce expenditure by £3.9m by 2019/20 through a range of budget proposals.

Councillor Ian Bruce, head of tourism and culture at the council, said the future financing of the pavilion was a "vital issue to be resolved".

He added that by allowing bookings which had already been made at the pavilion until the end of May, including the counting of votes for county council elections, meant tax payers would be spared any additional costs.

Councillors will next debate the 2013/14 budget at a management committee meeting on 5 February.
