Dorset Police said the boy was hit by a white Smart ForTwo.

The force said it was investigating the circumstances of the crash and appealed for witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage to come forward.

Sgt Dave Cotterill, of the force's traffic unit, said: "I would urge any motorists who were in the vicinity with dashcam fitted to please review their footage to see if they have captured anything of relevance."
