A pair of red telephone boxes are to be turned into "mini libraries".

While those behind the plans in Essex admit their boxes will never rival the likes of the British Library, they believe they will be well used.

The boxes were bought from BT for £1 after the telecommunications company declared them surplus to requirements.

In the next few weeks, the boxes off Stebbing Road and Willow Green, in Felsted, will be stocked with books and local information.

Graham Harvey, chairman of Felstead Parish Council, said: "We are hoping people will use them on a regular basis, and every time they take a book they will leave one behind."
