Essex drivers fined after dashcam tip offs

Four men pleaded guilty to careless driving at Colchester Magistrates' Court

Four drivers have been fined and handed penalty points after members of the public sent dashcam footage of careless driving to police.

One driver left a car meet and then burned the tyres of his Mercedes causing smoke to obscure the road.

The drivers were prosecuted after footage was sent to the Extra Eyes programme run by Essex Police and the Safer Essex Road Partnership (SERP).

The men admitted careless driving at Colchester Magistrates' Court.

The hearing on 5 October heard how a van driver overtook a cyclist on the wrong side of a keep left bollard on 14 June in Southend.

He was fined £133 and received three penalty points.

The driver of an Audi that overtook a cyclist without leaving enough space in Silver End on 5 July was fined £233 and handed three penalty points.

On 1 July a driver was caught using the hard shoulder of the M11 to overtake stationary traffic due to an incident further ahead on the road.

He made no attempt to rejoin traffic and was fined £216 and received three penalty points.

A £466 fine was given to the driver of a Mercedes leaving a car meet in the north of Essex on 25 June.

He was also issued five penalty points after he pleaded guilty to burning tyres, the smoke from which obscured the road.All four drivers were ordered to pay £110 costs and victim surcharges.
