Bill Witham, 68, was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition on 12 September 2022 and died 13 days later.

He had been found in a car in Lower Road, Hullbridge, at about 05:30 GMT.

Essex Police has said a 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm would face no further action.

A spokesman said it followed a "lengthy and thorough investigation" into the circumstances of Mr Witham's death.

'Sadly missed'

He said: "Our investigation included extensive advice from a forensic pathologist and frequent liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service.

"Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Bill Witham as they continue to come to terms with his death."

The spokesman said officers would prepare a report for the coroner.

Mr Witham was a well-known musician locally who regularly performed in pubs in south Essex, going by the stage name Napper Swan.

In a statement, his family said: "He was a much-loved character with a big heart and an even bigger smile.

"He will be sadly missed by all his friends and family and will forever be in our hearts."
