Fire damages Harwich railway station and nearby buildings

Police remained at Harwich Town railway station on Saturday after the fire

A railway station, surrounding buildings and nearby vehicles have been damaged in a suspected arson attack.

Emergency services were called to Harwich Town station just before 19:40 GMT on Friday.

Essex Police believes a fire started at a business premises before spreading to the railway building and bus station, while two vans nearby were also alight.

It said a 36-year-old man from the town was arrested on suspicion of arson endangering life.

The force added it did not believe the incident was connected to a fire at the LV18 light ship in the town a short time afterwards.

It appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to get in touch,

Det Ch Insp Nathan Hutchinson said: "Officers worked quickly to make a swift arrest and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident.

"We also do not believe this incident is connected with any other fires that took place last night.

"Harwich Town station is currently closed due to our investigation but we're anticipating it should reopen later today (Saturday) and we are working with British Transport Police and the rail operator".

Greater Anglia said, external: "Due to the police dealing with an incident between Dovercourt and Harwich Town, all lines are blocked."
