Gloucestershire waste strategy to be published

The proposals will have to go through the planning process

The proposed strategy for dealing with Gloucestershire's waste is to be made available to the public.

County councillors approved the next stage of the plans at a full meeting on Wednesday.

Before the meeting, more than 5,000 people against proposals for an incinerator handed in a petition to the council.

The council said it had to find an alternative to landfill and an incinerator was just one option.

Its residual waste project has also been put on hold until early 2011 after Defra withdrew £92m in funding last month.

'Fourteen policies'

A public consultation on 13 possible sites to be included in the strategy was carried out last year.

Following feedback, Wingmoor Farm East, Wingmoor Farm West, Javelin Park and land at Moreton Valance were shortlisted.

A council spokesman said there were 14 polices in the document on matters including dealing with recycling and composting, and environmental issues such as flood risk and transport.

He said the Waste Core Strategy would be published during December.

The proposals will have to go through the planning process.

The final strategy will be subject to public examination and has to be approved by the government, the spokesman added.
