Third of Gloucestershire council senior managers cut

One in three senior managers at Gloucestershire County Council will be axed as part of plans to save millions of pounds.

The cabinet earlier approved a report detailing the cuts, which form part of £5m of management savings.

A spokesman said six jobs, or 33%, would be lost in the first phase of cuts.

The Conservative-controlled authority will reduce its entire workforce by 1,000 people over the next four years.

The plans form part of a £108m savings programme.

'Residents' priorities'

A spokesman for the authority said the cuts were part of the first phase of management savings.

Mark Hawthorne, leader of the council, said: "It's right that the changes should start at the top.

"As a first step we are simplifying management, reducing posts and introducing a new way of working to ensure a much sharper focus on residents' priorities.

"We need a new approach where, in these financially challenging times, we ask hard questions about how we can provide services at the lowest possible cost."
