Dean of Gloucester to be installed at city cathedral

The new Dean of Gloucester is being installed into his post at a ceremony at the city's cathedral.

The Right Reverend Stephen Lake will become the 37th Dean in Gloucestershire after the Very Reverend Nicholas Bury resigned in October.

Mr Lake, who recently moved to Gloucester from St Albans with his family, said he was still unpacking but "excited and nervous" about his job.

"There is that great sense of the weight of history," he said.

Mr Lake explained that the title is Dean of Gloucester and not Dean of Gloucester Cathedral.

He said: "The Dean of Gloucester is not just responsible for the cathedral, it means dean of the county, the diocese, the city.

"I haven't sat in the dean's stall yet but the cushion that the Dean of Gloucester's bottom will sit on does have the name and date of the first dean back in 1540-something."

Mr Lake, 47, had been Canon Residentiary and Sub-Dean of St Albans Cathedral since 2001.

He is married with three children, a trustee of the Scout Association, and is a keen hill walker and supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.
