The revamp of Kings Square has got under way as part of multi-million pound plan to regenerate Gloucester city centre.
The public space will be levelled off and the existing buildings will be demolished and replaced with a lawn.
Leader of Gloucester city council Paul James said: "It will give us an opportunity to bring a bit of greenery into that bleakness until we have the wider Kings Quarter development."
Work is expected to last six weeks.
In July, the city council appointed Stanhope Plc to lead the regeneration project of Kings Quarter, which is expected to take up to three years to complete.
