Overnight parking charges in Cotswolds scrapped

A proposal which would have seen overnight parking charges introduced in Cotswold car parks has been dropped for all but one car park.

Cotswold District Council wanted to charge £1.50 in towns such as Tetbury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh.

But it has now decided to only introduce the charge at the Brewery Car Park in Cirencester.

Cirencester Town Council had threatened to take legal action over the plan.

'Too much'

District councillor David Fowles said the Brewery Car Park was the most used in the town centre and was a "very good car park" to introduce the charge in.

But he said other car parks would escape the evening and overnight charge as the authority felt the cost would be too much.

"In the light of the economic projections... we feel that now is not the time to extend or increase parking charges," he added.

Andrew Tubb, from Cirencester Town Council, said it was still considering legal action.

"I hope we will be able to move forward in a positive way to achieve a car parking policy which will support the vitality and viability of Cirencester," he said.
