New Stonehouse railway station plans discussed

Plans for a second railway station in Stonehouse, which could provide a direct route to Bristol, are to be discussed by the local authority.

Trains that currently run through Stonehouse station only go to Swindon and London, although there is a line in place to Bristol.

Commuters must travel to Gloucester or Cam and Dursley to get a train there.

Councillors will meet to discuss plans which could see a new station built on the site of one which closed in 1964.

The site, on the outskirts of the town, is currently used as a transport training area, and is owned by the British Rail Property Board.

Stonehouse councillor David Drew said the town was "one of the biggest employment centres in Gloucestershire".

"The site is there. It could very easily handle another halt. It just seems mad that you can get here on the London line, but you can't get here from Bristol, where an awful lot of people come here for work."
