Gloucester charity worker made 'Point of Light' by David Cameron

Reyaz Limalia runs projects creating new opportunities for hundreds of young people in Gloucestershire

The Prime Minister has named a charity worker as the latest winner of his Point of Light volunteering awards which recognise "outstanding" effort.

Reyaz Limalia has set up a range of youth and community programmes including space for faith groups and sports clubs across Gloucestershire.

"From saving a city farm to creating a community gym, Reyaz has shown the leadership and vision to make a difference," said Mr Cameron.

Mr Limalia said it was "a real honour."

In April 2011, Mr Limalia stepped in to take over the management of the St James City Farm in Gloucester which was facing closure.

The farm is now run on a daily basis by a group of volunteers, including young people aged between 10 and 15 years old.

The Prime Minister said: "It's people like Reyaz who make Gloucester a great place to live.

"The projects Reyaz runs are creating new opportunities for hundreds of young people in Gloucestershire and I'm delighted to be recognising Reyaz as a Point of Light."

Mr Limalia said he felt "very privileged to work with a lot of amazing volunteers".

"This award for me is a recognition of all of us who come together to create an amazing community," he added.

The new award has been developed in partnership with the Points of Light programme in the USA, which has recognised more than 5,000 people.

The US programme was established by President George W Bush and both he and President Barack Obama have publicly supported the partnership with Points of Light UK.
