Battle horse roundabout in Tewkesbury 'best in Britain'

A roundabout in Tewkesbury that features a wooden horse statue has been named Roundabout of the Year.

The award from the UK Roundabout Appreciation Society has been given to the Stonehills roundabout on the A38.

A 5m (16ft) tall sculpture was erected on it earlier this year to commemorate the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471.

Society chairman Kevin Beresford said the "imposing" statue reminded him of the final scene in the film The Wicker Man.

A photograph of the traffic island will now be featured on the front cover of an annual calendar depicting the best British roundabouts.

The sculpture was made from green oak from Gloucestershire trees

Mr Beresford said: "It is one of the most imposing roundabouts I've ever come across.

"It reminded me of the final scene in the Wicker Man. It really takes your breath away," he said.

"I've travelled the length and breadth of the country taking in one-way gyratories.

"There's nothing more expressive than a roundabout.

"I've seen fountains, statues, duck ponds, windmills and now we've got a battle scene.

"It just goes to show anything can go on a roundabout, and that's what makes them so special."

Previous winners of the award have included a roundabout with a duck pond in Kent and one featuring a working windmill in York.
