Motorists faced delays on a motorway after boxes containing sweets and beer kegs were spilt over the carriageway.

Two lanes of the M5 in Gloucestershire were closed after the spillage which also included books.

The problem was reported at 06:30 GMT on Friday and lanes 1 and 2 southbound were closed between junction 13 at Stroud and junction 14 at Thornbury.

National Highways said one of the lanes has since reopened. Gloucestershire police said closures were put in place.

Police said a single vehicle collision led to the spillage.

A statement from the force said the the incident happened near Michaelwood Services.

"Officers attended and there were a large amount of pallets which had fallen from a lorry and were on the hard shoulder and lane one of the carriageway.

"Closures were put in place and National Highways were contacted to attend and deal with the matter."
