Fire at former Southsea nightclub

The lower floors of the building used to be a nightclub

Fire has broken out in a derelict seafront building in Hampshire.

Crews were called to Savoy Court in South Parade, Southsea, at 17:35 BST on Tuesday.

The building, which used to house a nightclub, is next to the former Savoy Buildings which were demolished for redevelopment in 2009.

Eyewitnesses reported flames coming out of the building. Hampshire Fire and Rescue crews remained at the scene on Tuesday evening.

Portsmouth city councillor Luke Stubbs, who lives next to Savoy Court, said: "There's masses of smoke coming off the building and you can see flames coming out the top.

"I think the building will be destroyed at the end of this."

Hundreds of people gathered on the seafront to watch crews from at least seven appliances tackle the fire.

The neighbouring Savoy Buildings site is partly owned by Tottenham Hotspur manager and former Portsmouth FC manager Harry Redknapp.

Hampshire police said there was nothing to suggest the incident was related to civil unrest.
