Escaped horses injured on A31 in Hampshire

About 20 loose horses escaped on to a main road in Hampshire, leaving at least four badly injured after being hit by cars.
The A31 was closed in both directions after the animals got on to the road through an open gate at about 19:00 BST
It is understood some horses have suffered broken limbs and may have to be put down.
Police said the road between the Holybourne Roundabout, Alton and the A339 could be closed for some time.
All the uninjured horses had been returned to the field, although a police helicopter had been used to check for any other loose animals.
No people were injured but a woman in a car which hit a horse was being comforted at the scene.
