Dani King Olympic gold medal inspires Hamble cycle path

Olympic gold medallist Dani King is to be honoured by her Hampshire village with a cycle path named after her.

Team pursuit cyclist King, 21, took gold alongside Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell at the London 2012 Games.

Eastleigh Borough Council is to name the route through Hamble-le-Rice the Dani King Cycleway.

It passes her old primary school and sports college where she first started her cycling career. The medallist described the news as "an honour".

She said: "When people ride along it, I hope it will remind them of the legacy of the Olympics and inspire them to keep fit and enjoy sport."

The 2.3 mile (3.5km) route runs from Hamble Lane, Bursledon, to Copse Lane, Hamble-le-Rice.

Borough council leader Keith House said: "Dani is the first Olympic gold medallist from the borough for 80 years.

"We want to recognise her great achievement and what better way than naming the excellent cycling facilities in her own home village after her."

The route will also be marked by new signs at each end and at key points along it.
