Plans for a new America's Cup headquarters in Portsmouth have been unanimously approved by the city's planning committee.

Councillors voted in favour of Sir Ben Ainslie's plans to build his racing team's facility at Camber Docks in Old Portsmouth.

However, Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) still awaits confirmation of £8m of government funding for the project.

Portsmouth City Council is due to ratify the decision on 15 July.

Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: "The city will benefit hugely through 100s of jobs and income, which will flood in from hosting events. Importantly it's also a massive boost to our marine and maritime industry.

"We now await the outcome of government funding to complete the development."

On Monday, more than 500 people gathered at Portsmouth Cathedral to hear what Sir Ben had to say about the plans.

Some local people have raised concerns about the height of the proposed building, and because the site is a conservation area.

Local resident Gail Baird said: "In comparison to the Bridge Tavern [one of the tallest buildings on the proposed site], it's going to be three times the height, so it's going to dwarf a lot of the area."

However, it is hoped the project could create jobs and boost the economy in the city, where 900 jobs are being lost after BAE decided to end its shipbuilding there.

The Portsmouth Society had written in support of the plans, saying it would add to the vibrancy of the area.
