Southampton ukulele ensemble breaks world record

The majority of participants in the record attempt were from schools in Hampshire

A gathering of more than 2,300 ukulele players has set a new world record, it has been confirmed.

The musicians gathered for the record attempt at St Mary's Football Stadium in Southampton in July.

Guinness World Records confirmed the new gathering of 2,370, had beaten the previous record set in Japan where 2,134 people played together in 2012.

Hampshire County Council chairman Colin Davidovitz congratulated the children, parents and teachers who took part.

He said: "It gave the opportunity for the thousands of young people from all over the county, who love listening to music, to come together on a great occasion to make it for themselves.

"For many, I am sure, this could be the start of a rewarding career in the music industry."

Head of the county's music service Jill Larner said: "I am absolutely thrilled that Guinness World Records has officially recognised our efforts and I am immensely grateful to everyone that took part.

"It was a day to remember and I would like to congratulate all those who helped to make this possible and made our vision to set a new world record, a reality."

The set list for the event included You Are My Sunshine, When the Saints Come Marching In and a number written for the day called The Uke 'n' Sing Song.

The majority of the participants were from schools across Hampshire, and were led by children's entertainer Justin Fletcher, also known as Mr Tumble from CBeebies.
