The proposed lottery game would help fund good causes in the city

Charities could be set to benefit from a council-run sweepstake in Portsmouth.

Councillors gave the lottery scheme the green light at a meeting on Tuesday.

The proposal by Portsmouth City Council would see all the money raised given to good causes across the city.

A report into how much it would cost the Conservative-led authority to set up will now be drawn up. Councillor Luke Stubbs, who put forward the idea, said it would not be difficult to get running.

"We need to find out if this would work for Portsmouth," he added.

The initiative is available to councils under the Localism Act.

Aylesbury Vale District Council became the first council in the country to set up a lottery scheme in November.
