A fire that broke out at a scrapyard is now under control.

The fire at S. Norton Scrapyard on Western Avenue, Southampton, started on Friday at 19:50 BST and involved 1,500 tonnes of material.

Hampshire Fire Service said 13 crews were involved in fighting the fire and residents in nearby Shirley were advised to avoid the area.

The service said the blaze was now under control though some crews remained at the scene to "damp down".

The fire service had extinguished all the burning material by 22:30 BST, and said there were "no injuries and minimal damage caused by the fire".

In a statement, S. Norton, who collect, process and distribute over 1.5 million tonnes of recycled scrap metal a year, said: "We can confirm that on Friday 14 July, a small fire in a stockpile of unprocessed scrap broke out at our Southampton site.

"We would also like to apologise to our neighbours and the general public for any disruption this incident may have caused."
