Gosport man spotted jumping on back of fire engine

A man has been spotted catching a lift by jumping on the back of a fire engine.

Engineer Steve Ridley was on his way home from work when he saw the man run and jump to catch hold of the railings on the back of the vehicle.

His passenger filmed the "odd moment" on Thursday, where the man held on to the engine for at least six minutes.

The fire service and police have both been approached for comment on the dangers of doing this.

Mr Ridley said he found the incident, which happened in Forton Road in Gosport, Hampshire at 15:30 GMT, "bizarre" and joked that perhaps the man "thought the floor was lava".

'Definitely on a mission'

He said the man ran straight past Mr Ridley's van into the middle of the road and headed straight towards the fire engine "with purpose - he was definitely on a mission".

Mr Ridley continued: "I couldn't work out if the guy wanted a free lift somewhere, but the amount of effort he was putting into holding on to the fire engine, it would've been much easier to walk.

"I can only imagine he wanted to get somewhere in hurry. You see odd things at times, but this was just bizarre.

"It annoys me that people think they can treat our amazing hard working services personnel and vehicles with such disrespect."
