Annual Southampton Christmas toy appeal launched

Shoppers can drop off donated gifts at collection points such as Westquay shopping centre

A Christmas appeal has been launched to collect toys for children in care or whose families cannot afford gifts.

Southampton City Council's annual appeal sees presents distributed to children and young people supported by its children's services department.

Individuals and businesses are asked to donate items at drop-off points across the city.

Council leader Satvir Kaur said the cost-of-living crisis meant families were "struggling" at Christmas.

She said: "In Southampton its amazing to have communities come together to support the toy appeal.

"We want to ensure that each child is valued and doesn't miss out."

It is the 35th year the appeal has been held, with up to 7,000 gifts donated annually during previous efforts.

Individuals and businesses can donate gifts at various drop-off points, including Westquay Shopping Centre and the Civic Centre, before 21 December.

Organisers said there was a specific plea for gifts for young people, especially males aged 12-18, with items like headphones, sports equipment and rucksacks on their wish list.

A team of 300 volunteers helps wrap and distribute the gifts in time to be opened on Christmas Day.
