A man has been jailed for life for murdering the man who confronted him, after he saw the killer holding hands with his ex-girlfriend.

Thomas Barton, 30, from Brading, Isle of Wight, was repeatedly stabbed in a "swift and brutal attack" in Ryde in May, Winchester Crown Court heard.

Cameron Baker, 28, from Sandown, has been sentenced to life with a minimum term of 21 years in prison.

Mr Barton was described as a "caring, kind" person during the sentencing.

The father-of-one was stabbed in Park Road, Ryde, in the early hours of 28 May.

A jury previously heard Mr Barton had seen his ex, Sammi Creed, holding Baker's hand.

The court heard this sight led to a string of events and Mr Barton's father, Peter Thomas, 84, said his son was "looking for a fistfight".

Mr Barton was stabbed several times, which Baker, of Leed Street, claimed happened after he acted in self defence.

Det Ch Insp Andrea Douglas, from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, said the incident was "tragic".

She said: "Tommy Barton was a young man who was killed in a senseless and despicable act of violence.

"Cameron Baker will now spend a considerable length of time in prison as a result of his actions that night.

"Knives completely destroy lives, and we urge communities to keep reporting information to us around knife crime, and those who carry weapons."
