Drivers are being warned to plan ahead as work to re-line a sewer under a main route in Portsmouth starts.

Southern Water said the repair to the 500m (1,640ft) long sewer under Eastern Road should "stop recurring issues with the underground pipe".

The road, a major route into the city, has been shut numerous times in recent months for repairs to the sewer.

The first phase of the work will see the southbound lane shut from 20:00 on Saturday until 20:00 on 9 February.

Southern Water said the work would be carried out round the clock. Drivers are being urged to seek alternative routes into the city.

The water firm said it had opted to re-line the sewer because it was quicker than a normal repair and needed less digging as the lining is fed though the underground sewer pipe.

A date and timings for the second section of the pipe to be re-lined is yet to be set.
