A man has been charged over the alleged smuggling of hundreds of people into the UK in boats and lorries.

He was arrested in Portsmouth and charged with conspiring to breach immigration law and acquiring or possessing criminal property.

The 45-year-old was remanded in custody by Portsmouth magistrates to appear before the city's crown court in April.

A second man, who was arrested in Italy last month, remains in custody as extradition proceedings continue.
