Extra beds approved for Alexandra Hospital in Redditch

Extra beds for accident and emergency patients will be provided in Worcestershire, an NHS trust has said.

The Alexandra Hospital in Redditch will receive up to £1m for 26 beds to reduce waiting times in busy winter months.

Similar plans for extra beds at Worcestershire Royal Hospital have been turned down due to "financial" and "logistical" issues, the trust said.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said investing at the Alexandra was more practical and affordable.

Phil Milligan, the trust's chief operating officer, said: "A number of proposals to increase the number of beds on the Worcestershire Royal site have been explored but, due to logistical, planning or financial implications, those proposals have proven unviable for winter 2010/11."

The trust said demand for accident and emergency beds rose from 760 across both hospital sites in August to about 840 beds in January.
