New training scheme to keep young people in Worcester

A new £30,000 training scheme has started to encourage "bright and talented" young people not to move away from Worcester for their careers.

Worcester City Council will help small and medium-sized local businesses take on apprentices and interns.

Councillor Simon Geraghty said: "Many firms just don't have the resources to invest in training for the future."

The internship scheme is in partnership with University of Worcester and will aim to place 18 graduates with firms.

The graduates will be employed on a contract lasting for at least 12 months, and will also complete a work-based project with the university during that period.

Worcester College of Technology will be the partner for the apprenticeship scheme, which will have 12 places for local people.

They will be placed with city businesses which have not previously been able to afford to take on apprentices.

Mr Geraghty said: "One of the big challenges facing Worcester is how we retain our bright and talented people, and make sure we don't lose them to other cities.

"This scheme will help them find and develop the talent they need to secure Worcester's future prosperity."
