Celebrations mark end of Hereford Cathedral £5m makeover

The restoration of the Cathedral Close has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund

Hereford Cathedral will be marking the end of its £5m pound makeover restoration project on Saturday.

The completion of two years of work on the Cathedral Close area are being celebrated with fireworks and bell-ringing.

Environmentally-friendly lighting will highlight parts of it, rather than floodlighting the whole building.

Work has included the restoration of the 13th Century Cathedral Barn and a new apple tree mosaic.

Earlier this year, the Dean of Hereford, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor, said that the new lighting system will "bring many benefits, including using a lot less energy."

The lighting scheme will compliment the new landscape and illuminate pathways and features, said the cathedral.

Funding has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund, donations from national and local groups and individuals from Herefordshire.

Earlier this year, the Dean of Hereford, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor, said lighting systems had "developed tremendously".

The celebrations at the cathedral are free and begin at 19:30 BST. There is also a showing of two films, featuring local memories and work, from 18:00 BST.
