A deal which will lead to the £90m regeneration of Hereford's former market has been given the green light by Herefordshire Council.

The council's cabinet agreed on minor changes to the agreement which will "pave the way" for regenerating the old market site, a spokesman said.

The project will include a public square, two new streets and a cinema.

Council leader John Jarvis has defended the decision to hold some of the meeting in private.

Some opponents of the scheme were angered that part of the cabinet meeting was held in private, but Mr Jarvis said certain commercial details had to be kept confidential.

The changes approved by the cabinet will be considered by the council's overview and scrutiny committee on 13 April.

The livestock market, which operated at the site for more than 150 years, moved last July so the area around Edgar Street could be redeveloped.
