Harvest collections go to Herefordshire food banks

Many churches in Herefordshire will be giving food donated during Harvest Festival events to food banks to meet growing demand.

Jackie Boys, a chief co-ordinator of Hereford Food Bank, said the number of customers and outlets had increased greatly since it was set up in 2008.

She said the bank had to find about 300 tins of food each week for more than 50 customers.

Ms Boys added the churches had been happy to help.

She said demand for their service was increasing as people struggled during the recession.

"We don't just have one larder now, we have larders across the county," she said.

"We've got food banks operating in most of the market towns in the county now and Tenbury Wells so they take a lot of stocking up."
