Worcester Cathedral has launched a Christmas Appeal to raise "vital funds" towards its upkeep

An appeal has been launched to raise "vital" funds to help keep Worcester Cathedral open for years to come.

The cathedral has announced a Christmas appeal aimed at raising money towards its upkeep and mission, amid "increasing financial hardship."

It has appealed for donations to support staff over the festive period and to help keep the building heated.

Thousands of visitors are expected to attend several events at the cathedral, including a Christmas Tree Festival.

A crib service on Christmas Eve, featuring real donkeys and sheep, is another of the scheduled events, a cathedral spokesperson said.

Donations will also be to used to support choirs performing over the festive period.

Canon Stephen Edwards encouraged visitors to join the many activities, events and services.

He described the cathedral, which dates back to 1084, as a "cherished historic building", a "place of celebration" and a "home to joyful music".

"And if you feel able to donate to our Christmas appeal, help us to be here for years to come," he added.
