Humberside Fire Service appeal for retained crews

Humberside Fire Service has appealed for volunteers to come forward to keep a North Lincolnshire fire station open.

Retained firefighters are needed to maintain a service at Kirton in Lindsey fire station, which has recently been refurbished and has a new fire engine.

Watch manager John Armson said: "It is often difficult to recruit retained firefighters because they are not aware of what it involves."

He said volunteers had to be able to provide cover day and night.

Mr Armson said: "Being a retained firefighter is way of helping your community whilst receiving expert training and delivering an essential emergency service.

"The role involves making yourself available at different times of the day and night to provide emergency cover.

"Those who are selected will receive a retainer payment and get paid extra when called out to emergencies.

"I can say from experience that it is a great role and is a vital service to our communities."
