Cleethorpes' leaking boot statue destroyed by vandals

A statue on Cleethorpes seafront has been destroyed by vandals.

The Boy with the Leaking Boot sculpture has been a fixture of the seaside town since 1918.

It was attacked by vandals over the weekend. The damaged pieces were thrown into a lake in the park where the statue is located.

It is the second time the sculpture has been badly damaged in recent years. It was last restored in 2008 after being stolen.

The attack comes just two weeks after the North East Lincolnshire town won a gold award in the RHS Britain In Bloom competition.

Peter Feltz, from Cleethorpes in Bloom, said: "It's a big blow because a lot of people walk up and down here and see that. That is the main attraction. It's a shame it is happening. It shouldn't be happening."

The sculpture was donated to the town by shipping magnate John Carlborn in 1918.

It is one of many similar ones located in cities across the world, including versions in New Orleans and Stockholm.

A replacement statue is currently being made.
