East Yorkshire's fortnightly bin collection trial to be expanded

The fortnightly bin collection trial will be extended from next month

A trial of fortnightly bin collections in East Yorkshire is to be expanded.

More than 7,000 homes had their weekly black bin collections dropped and alternated with blue recycling bins back in April.

The trial will be expanded to selected streets in Beverley, Hornsea and Market Weighton from next month.

Streets in Anlaby, Pocklington, Roos, Burton Pidsea, Stamford Bridge and Willerby will also be included.

From 1 October, a total of 19,500 homes will have recycling bins emptied on a fortnightly basis.

'Public demand'

The council said 70% of all household waste was being recycled in the trial areas compared to 60% for the rest of the county.

Councillor Symon Fraser said: "[Residents] have been making it clear that the monthly collection of the blue bin...was no longer working for them.

"This trial will help us meet expectations and the results to date have been very impressive."

The trial started in response to demands from the public to increase the rate of collection of the recycling bins.

It initially included streets in Cottingham, Brough, Elloughton, Hutton Cranswick, Keyingham, Little Driffield, Swanland and Thorngumbald.
