Grimsby swimming pool's fate yet to be decided

The council said all of the authority's leisure and sporting facilities would go out to public consultation

The future of a swimming pool in Grimsby has gone out to public consultation.

It comes after a petition signed by 6,000 people calling for it to stay open was handed to councillors at a meeting earlier.

North East Lincolnshire Council plans to replace Grimsby Swimming Pool, known as Scartho Baths, with a new leisure centre elsewhere in the town.

Earlier it said the pool was "out of date" and would cost £1.6m to repair.

But a campaign group said the council was "putting money before the community".

'Lack of transparency'

Councillor Mick Burnett said all of the authority's leisure and sporting facilities would go out for public consultation.

He said: "After receiving the petition we felt it important to give the public another opportunity to tell us where they think we should be making investments in leisure facilities.

"Difficult decisions have to be made in tough economic times and unfortunately a number of our facilities are coming to the end of their useful life, needing millions of pounds worth of investment to make them fit for the foreseeable future."

Alan Barrett, from Save Scartho Baths, had previously said: "We find that swimming clubs and major pool users haven't been consulted in this and it's all been done with a lack of transparency."
