A prisoner has been stabbed at Full Sutton prison in East Yorkshire, according to the Ministry of Justice.
The prison service said it happened at 16:00 GMT on Monday, when the man was attacked by another inmate.
A spokesperson said: "The prisoner was taken by ambulance to hospital and treated for a stomach wound; he was returned to the prison that night.
"The police are investigating and the prison will conduct an internal investigation."
Full Sutton, which is near York, is a maximum security prison for men, which the Ministry of Justice said held "some of the most difficult and dangerous criminals in the country".
